Background I started coaching in October 1999 and wondered how on earth I could charge for coaching when I was so new and had little confidence in my coaching ability…so I didn’t. As I had to keep eating, pay the mortgage, etc. my savings depleted rapidly. Process
As the bank account kept on going down I was forced to charge something and started with £160/month for four sessions …calculation helped by the contents of Chapter 6 of High Income Consulting by Tom Lambert …all of this book is highly recommended for novices like me. Eventually after about 6 months and a vastly depleted bank and savings account I got one then two then three clients (private small businesses) and then I got a trial with a local corporate … but what to charge them???
I thought that they would not respect the equivalent of £40 - I mean they pay more than that for the cars to be maintained!! And they pay more than double that for their accountants, auditors and other professional..
Heart in mouth I decided to charge them £280/month + VAT (as a sole trader I am VAT registered) for four sessions face to face, charged in advance and paid by them at the beginning of the month following ie. if I send them invoices in August and they will pay them at the beginning of October by BACS.
The HR Director said “Fine” – huge sigh of relief – and we started. They liked the results and sent another challenge to me and it went on from there. By the way the sessions take place off-site at a place 1 mile from my home/office that takes me about 10 minutes to get to and as I am not a clock watcher, the sessions tend to go over the 60 minutes. Anything over 75 minutes is charged at that portion of one hour. The next corporate client I charged £280/month..
The next one involved some travelling so it went up to £320/month for face to face and some phone coaching, and they paid for the sandwiches or the sushi. Meanwhile my private clients continued at £160/month + VAT and they were very happy. By this time I was up to about 12 clients, some weekly, some bi-weekly, some monthly and I was feeling great, confidence was increasing, knowledge was going up and clients were saying nice things.
Over the past nine years this is how my “Robin Hood” price list has gone for four coaching sessions:-
